Ernst Lubitsch was a film director, producer, and actor who was a key figure in Weimar cinema and the Golden Hollywood era. He is best known for his sparkling interwar comedies including Ninotchka (1939), starring Greta Garbo, and To Be or Not to Be (1942), starring Carole Lombard. The famous 'Lubitsch touch' has been celebrated and imitated by filmmakers such as Billy Wilder and Peter Bogdanovich.
